SCHOOL'S IN AT GOOGONG

Tuesday, 18 December, 2012

The Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn has announced it will expand its educational presence at Googong to create the first Anglican Kindergarten–Year 12 school facility in the region.

The Anglican School, Googong, will comprise a primary school, which is expected to open for the start of the 2015 school year, and high school, which will be open to students at a date to be determined, and possibly an early learning centre for children aged 3 to 4. The facility will be built and operated by the Diocese.

The Anglican Bishop of Canberra and Goulburn, Stuart Robinson, says that the Diocese has had a long-term desire to establish educational facilities in the broad Queanbeyan and Jerrabomberra region to offer families in these areas an option for accessible Anglican education.

“The fact that these facilities can be co-located in a growing and vital community will enable the Diocese to further its mission, offering a continuing and consistent and highquality standard of education to students from the time they start their earliest learning, right through to the end of their secondary schooling,” Bishop Robinson says.

“We are delighted to be coming to beautiful Googong, which has one of the prettiest landscapes in this local region, as we want to build a quality, attractive school that will be a foundation of this community, be sympathetic to the local environment and that will become an important part of the lives of those who live here.”

Googong Project Director Mark Attiwill says that the number of students at the school will grow as the township develops. “The school will be co-educational, low fee and open entry, so all Googong kids are welcome to enrol,” he says. “And as well as Googong children, students from all our catchment areas, including Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and Canberra, will also be welcome.”

Mr Attiwill says that when selecting a site for a new school, the Diocese considered a range of factors, including demographic and population trends in the surrounding region, proximity to established areas including Canberra and Queanbeyan, as well as projected educational trends for the region.

Award winning architects Munns Sly Moore will design the new school which will be situated on one of Googong’s highest points.

“As well as the benefits to Googong of having a quality and highly respected school operator at the township, there are also clear benefits for families and students,” Mr Attiwill says. “These include convenient location and ease of access, consistency in education standards and delivery, and a quality and trusted provider for students throughout their primary and secondary schooling.”
