GOOGONG II GETS GO-AHEAD

Friday, 25 January, 2013

The Canberra Times, Stephanie Anderson

The New South Wales Joint Regional Planning Panel has approved the second stage of the Googong housing development.

Queanbeyan mayor Tim Overall has welcomed the decision, saying the development, valued at more than $50 million, was significant to the region.

Stage two of the Googong development provides for 442 residential lots, a neighbourhood centre, land for a public school, land for an Anglican school, sporting fields and parks,’’ he said.

Following the approval of 336 lots in 2012, this now takes the total lots approved at Googong to 778.

This development will stretch over a further 15 years, with more than 4500 lots to be considered in future stages.’’

Earthworks for the first stage of development commenced onsite near the Googong Dam on Old Cooma Road last year, with the first houses expected to be completed towards the end of 2013.

When complete, the development will house about 16,000 people living in 5550 dwellings. Schools, parks, shops and businesses are also included in the development.
