Peet’s Fort Largs to commence historic restoration

Today a handover ceremony in the City of Port Adelaide Enfield signified the transfer of the land and the commencement of construction at leading Australian property developer Peet’s newest development – Fort Largs.

Peet commemorated the development milestone alongside special guests the City of Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Claire Boan, Assistant Police Commissioner Scott Duval and Vice-President of the South Australian Police Historical Society Kym Hardwick .

Built for strategic defence purposes, over its lifetime Fort Largs has been home for a range of uses, including home of the South Australian Police Academy. Fort Largs plays an integral role in the history of the South Australian coastline, with the restoration set to be the next chapter for the iconic site, with construction expected to be completed by 2025.

Peet State Manager – South Australia, Mark Devine said the handover signifies the first steps in an exciting development for the Fort Largs community.
“The site is unique due to both is beachfront location and rich history. We are excited to be able to commence the development of this new coastal community that will capitalise on its beachfront location whilst ensuring we capture the rich culture which comes with the prestigious site. Not only do we want to provide a community for everyone to enjoy, but we also want to ensure we are preserving the Fort’s valuable heritage for generations to come,” said Mr Devine.

“Opening to the public for the first time, Fort Largs will once again become a hub of activity. The site will be introduce a range of new beachside homes, as well as becoming home to a café, market and community event space that celebrates the Fort’s deep history.”

The $150 million project plans to provide the Fort with an economically sustainable future, whilst increasing accessibility to the public, offering a range of housing options as well as new public open spaces to provide a highly sought-after lifestyle, on the picturesque peninsula.

As part of the development, Peet is working with South Australian fishing industry identity Jarn Jamison, who will take charge of the Fort – which has a strong focus on local food producers and public access.

The Fort will host a variety of local food stalls, weekly fresh produce markets and special community events, all while appreciating the impressive coastal views of the Lefevre Peninsula.

The strategic design of Fort Largs will offer modern living options that not only reflect the local setting but are attainable for a variety of purchasers, with approximately 800 residents expected at completion who will start moving in from early 2023. Early 2023 will also see the completion of the first display homes from a selection of Adelaide’s leading home builders as well as the completion of the onsite café.

Peet has established a Heritage Working Group with the South Australian Police Historical Society, Army Museum of South Australia and RSL Largs Bay Sub-Branch to assist with various heritage interpretive projects that will help all future visitors understand and make meaning of the Fort’s role in the history of our state
