Peet’s Brabham community in Perth’s north-east corridor has won the national UDIA Award for Excellence in the category of Sustainability, recognised for its integrated, future-focused approach to planning and delivery.
The 2,750-lot community, developed by Peet and DevelopmentWA across 220 hectares, was recognised for embedding sustainability across the community, from energy and water initiatives to urban ecology and community education, demonstrating how innovating can deliver long-term environmental and social outcomes at scale.
Central to the project is the Better Life Bonus, a sustainability package offering every purchaser up to $13,000* in sustainable inclusions at no additional cost, including solar panels, battery storage, a heat pump and a home energy management system. The package has achieved 90 per cent uptake since its introduction, demonstrating strong buyer demand for accessible sustainability in new housing.
“We’re proud to have Brabham recognised as one of the nation’s leading sustainable development projects,” said Paul Morgan, Peet Western Australia State Manager. “Through smart design, Brabham is proof that sustainability and affordability can come together to deliver outstanding communities.”
The project’s Innovation Fund has driven a series of industry-leading initiatives, including the Brabham Green Homes Display, which at the time of construction held the distinction of being Australia’s most sustainable two-storey home with a 9.2-star NatHERS rating, well above the then 6-star industry standard.
Brabham has also transformed 4.2 hectares of degraded agricultural land into a constructed wetland system that delivers water quality treatment, flood management and ecological restoration, while estate-wide smart irrigation has reduced water use by up to 57 per cent.
“What we’re most proud of is that these aren’t pilot initiatives or one-off demonstrations,” Mr Morgan said. “These are systems and standards that are built into the fabric of the community and can be replicated in other communities across Australia.”
The community holds a 6-Star Green Star Communities rating from the Green Building Council of Australia, signifying world leadership in sustainable development, and has achieved Platinum Waterwise Development status from Water Corporation. With lot prices starting from $440,000 and approximately 1,000 lots now constructed or under construction, Brabham continues to deliver new homes across the site.
Brabham’s national sustainability award was announced alongside Peet’s Fort Largs community in South Australia, which was named Best Masterplanned Community and Project of the Year at the same ceremony.
