Time to Seal the Deal at Avon Ridge
Ian and Catherine Milliner cannot wait to move into their striking architecturally designed house at Peet Limited’s Avon Ridge. And with 3.75 hectares (approximately 36,420 square metres) of land to play with, they certainly aren’t cramped for space. The Milliners are making a tree change by moving to Avon Ridge, having until recently lived in a townhouse in North Fremantle on just 225 square metres of land.
“With our five children starting to have babies, we felt the townhouse was getting a little small and we needed something bigger, so we started to consider what the next move would look like,” explained Catherine.
“We went to Brigadoon to look at a home open - I had never been to Brigadoon - and we just fell in love with the country and the location, being so close to the Swan Valley and Mundaring. On top of that, we realised after looking at established homes, we wouldn’t get what we wanted without building and we really want this house to be our dream home.”
The Milliner’s stunning new home has been custom designed to blend in with the natural surroundings and is built using innovative materials to help protect the house in the event of a bushfire.
“We haven’t used brick to build this house, instead we’ve used a product called Inex which is like weatherboard but it’s approved for bushfire building zones,” Ian Milliner said.
Designed by West Leederville-based architects Collaborative Design, the house consists of a group of modules with simple roof forms linked by a series of decks and covered walkways.
Each module forms a different part of the house. One houses the living area, the second a master bedroom suite, the third the secondary bedrooms and the fourth is the studio / office with the final module serving as the garage and workshop. Four of the five modules were pre-fabricated off site, trucked into position and are being linked with either external decks or enclosed concrete floors. These modules are constructed using cladding materials with a two hour fire rating and non-combustible floors, windows and roofs.
The fifth module which is the garage and workshop has been made using concrete wall panels to create a completely fireproof building which will also serve as a safe refuge should the family be unable to escape a bushfire on their property.
The contemporary home is elevated and provides uninterrupted views across the external deck and cleverly located lap pool to the bushland of the national park located on the northern boundary of the property. Catherine commented that they love the physical nature of the land and are making the most of the view with the expansive 160 square metre deck. The home is still under construction with the Milliner’s hoping to move in by the end of November.
“I have found 40 different wild flowers just on our property and our block runs into the Walyunga National Park which is fantastic. We love taking the grandkids around and showing them the surrounding nature. We also love the joy our friends and family get from sharing the amazing sunsets and space we have.”
