Tonsley Innovation District's Boiler House
to become new brewhouse
Built in the 1960s, Tonsley's iconic Boiler House once pumped steam and electricity into the main assembly factory where Mitsubishi and Chrysler vehicles were manufactured. But since the Tonsley factory closed, it’s been gathering dust. That’s all set to change, with the building becoming a hive of activity once again when it re-opens next year. The 800-square-metre building will be transformed into an industrial, modern, bespoke venue that will offer a brewhouse – starring Lady Burra Brewery – a wine bar, eateries and function spaces rolled into one facility, comprised of sensitively-designed spaces and zones. |
The plan is to retain the building's industrial and functional character, with its exposed infrastructure and overhead gantry. The team are looking at what can be reused, are working with the bones of the building and not changing the aesthetic too much. Tonsley will handcraft beers on site under the Lady Burra label – such as the existing and popular Pale Ale, Pilsner, Irish Red Ale and India Pale Ale – while also introducing some Tonsley-specific varieties. The arrival of the Boiler House microbrewery and hospitality hub is expected to generate employment for 100 new staff during the next 12 months. |
