LIGHTSVIEW WETLANDS
Wetlands are so important to the success of the Lightsview lifestyle, to prevent flooding, clean the water and keep our outdoor spaces green and healthy.
six new areas at Lightsview are now open for play!
Take a look at the map below to see which areas are open.
The remaining playground, recreation activities and connecting walking trails to complete Lightsview’s full system of wetlands are under construction and expected to be completed mid-2021. It will then take another 12-18 months for the water plants to fully develop.
Wetlands help soften the urban landscape
Wetlands help soften the urban landscape by feeding the plants, encouraging animal life, dealing with stormwater run-off and helping create a peaceful backdrop of greenery, shade and space.
The wetland system
A constructed wetland system is a shallow water body that receives urban stormwater and is densely covered with a diverse range of water plants. A wetland system supports a healthy ecosystem that is able to filter and process the contaminants carried in stormwater to cleanse the water before being released.
Sustainable water bodies
The wetlands and the Central Lake all contribute to creating sustainable water bodies in the urban area for the benefit of the community.
How it works
The wetlands filter and process pollutants, they support a wide range of plants and animals adding to the urban biodiversity and also importantly, they are designed specifically to support recreation activities in and around the wetlands with walking paths, boardwalks, stepping stones, a playground and active play spaces.
Protecting homes during heavy rain
The three grassed basin areas have been designed to fill up with water, to protect surrounding homes in very heavy rain conditions. As the remaining wetland area is under construction, the flow of water is managed through pumps to avoid the water coming into the areas that are under construction.
Adventure Playground
Younger children (and those young at heart!) will appreciate the adventure playgrounds, featuring both standard and interactive nature play-style equipment.
6.2ha Green Open Space
The substantial master-planned park – a $7 million investment – is eco-sensitive, including detention basins able to withhold up to 90,000 cubic metres of rainfall catchment in extreme weather.
Greenery
Eucalypts, native water plants and South Australian flora will provide beautiful greenery throughout, with over 150 trees and 20,000 plants and aquatics due for planting.
Tranquil Surrounds
Residents will be able to sit and absorb the tranquil natural surrounds, with its catchment for ducks and wildlife, admiring sunrises and sunsets illuminating the sparkling water and reeds.
