Local residents give Lakelands Community House a warm welcome
21/08/2008Hundreds of Lakelands residents and members of the surrounding community turned out to give the new Lakelands Community House a warm welcome last weekend (Saturday 9 August).
City of Mandurah Mayor Paddi Creevey officially opened the Community House, unveiling a framed photograph of the new facility at Peet Limited’s award-winning Lakelands Private Estate.
The crowd was kept entertained throughout the day by roving performers, face painters and live music, with a special arts and crafts area also proving a huge hit.
Local community groups including the Peel Volunteer Resource Centre, Neighbourhood Watch and the Lions Club of Mandurah were on hand to share valuable information about the groups operating in the area.
City of Mandurah Mayor Paddi Creevey said it was fantastic to see the new facility already helping to bring the community together.
“The Lakelands Community House was designed to provide a place for the local community to interact with each other and it was great to see so many people enjoy the opening celebration,” Mayor Creevey said.
“This facility will provide a valuable resource for individuals and community groups alike, and will help build and maintain a strong community here in Lakelands.”
The Lakelands Community House is located on the corner of Dalona Parkway and Jasper Way in Lakelands Private Estate. The House has been designed to suit all members of the community and features wheelchair access, wide internal corridors and doorways throughout.
It features a large open plan family room ideal for group activities as well as a smaller boardroom for both formal and informal meetings, with a well equipped kitchen to provide for catering needs. There is also a beautifully landscaped backyard with a decked cabana, large sandpit and play area for young children.
Peet Limited Managing Director Brendan Gore said the Lakelands Community House is a great demonstration of what can be achieved through partnerships.
“The House has been made possible through a partnership between the City of Mandurah and Peet Limited and provides a valuable community facility for the local area. This partnership has enabled the City of Mandurah to provide an interim community facility very early in the development of Lakelands well before a permanent facility would ever be contemplated,” said Mr Gore.
“It is very encouraging to see so many residents already submitting ideas for functions in the House and we look forward to seeing those come to fruition in coming months.”
The Lakelands Community House is already the new home for the Lakelands Sales and Information Office and will also host future meetings of the Lakelands community group. It will also be available for use by other local community groups, and will form a hub for Lakelands and the surrounding neighbourhood.
