Peet Chairman awarded top industry honour
13/06/2007Peet Limited Chairman Tony Lennon has been awarded the REIWA Kevin Sullivan Memorial Award in recognition of his significant contribution to the property industry.
The presentation was made at the 2007 REIWA Award Dinner, held at the Hyatt on Saturday 9 June.
The REIWA Kevin Sullivan Memorial Award was instigated by the Institute in 1989 in memory of the late Kevin Sullivan, a prominent and highly respected member of the Institute. As a fitting tribute, the Award criteria are excellence, achievement and professionalism.
For Tony Lennon, receiving this Award is a great honour, and recognition of a career spanning 45 years.
“There is no better acknowledgement than that received from your peers. It’s a wonderful feeling,” said Mr Lennon.
“I’ve certainly enjoyed my career to date, but there’s a lot more to come. It’s an exciting time for Peet Limited right around the country and that presents an enormous amount of opportunity,” he said.
Over almost half a century, Mr Lennon has accumulated extensive experience in property acquisition, development of subdivisions and the marketing of land estates, while his confident approach has earned the respect of industry peers, shareholders and institutional investors alike.
In his role as Chairman of Peet Limited, he is a key architect of the company’s strategic approach to growth. A Director of the Company for more than 20 years, he held the role of Executive Chairman prior to Peet’s listing on the Australian Stock Exchange in 2004 and has more than 40 years' broad experience in the property industry.
He is also a qualified valuer with a family background in property and a period in partnership with his father which led him to establish his own business in 1972. In 1985 he took a controlling interest in Peet Limited in 1985 as Managing Director.
His belief in Peet and his commitment to fostering its long-term development and growth has seen him retain a major shareholding in the company.
Mr Lennon is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and an Associate of the Australian Property Institute. A former President of the Real Estate Institute of Western Australia (REIWA), he has also served as the Institute’s Senior Arbitrator (Ethics and Practice) and as a Councillor of the national body, the Real Estate Institute of Australia.
He is a former Chairman of both the Perth Inner City Living Task Force and the Residential Densities Review Taskforce and a Member of the Commercial Tenancies Tribunal– roles to which he was appointed by the the Western Australian State Government, in recognition of his extensive industry experience and commitment to the community.
Other community roles have included President of Western Australia’s Shire of Peppermint Grove. He was Deputy Chairman of the National Board of the Australia Day Council which was a Commonwealth Government appointment in recognition of community service and he also served as Chairman of the Australia Day Council of Western Australia.
He is also a former Chairman of the Curtin Aged Persons Foundation and a founding Director of the Wearne and the Riversea Hostels for the Aged, both of which are locally-initiated and managed community facilities.
As a result of winning this award, Tony will now be nominated by REIWA for the REIA Presidents Award at the 2008 National Awards for Excellence being held in Melbourne next March.
