Countdown for Community Grants
06/06/2007Applications for the latest round of the Village at Wellard community sponsorship program close on Friday 15 June, so if your community group, project or event needs a jump start – now is the time to apply!
Since its inception three years ago, the program has provided 27 different community projects with around $40,000 in much needed funds.
Peet Limited Managing Director Warwick Hemsley urged interested organisations to submit their application now.
"This program is an important part of the project's commitment to building the local community, supporting the groups and volunteers who are making a significant contribution to the Kwinana community," he said.
One of last year's successful projects was a series of cooking classes hosted by the Frank Konecny Community Centre in Parmelia for children in the Kwinana region. The Centre's adult cooking classes had already proved popular, but with childhood obesity a hot topic, it was decided that classes for kids that were educational and fun would help combat a 'growing' problem.
Family Support Co-ordinator Sue Webber said the cooking classes taught children the importance of healthy eating and how to prepare nutritious food, while also providing an environment where interaction and socialisation skills could be improved.
"The grant provided by the Department of Housing and Works and Peet Limited enabled the community centre to run the course at a nominal cost, which made it accessible to more families," she said.
Other successful recipients include the Rockingham Kwinana Youth Skills Training Scheme, who needed materials for woodworking activities, computer skills training and other workshops, and the Kwinana Golf Club, which used funds to stage a free Community Open Day.
